On March 5, 2026, CARE organized a scientific seminar on groundwater and geochemistry, featuring two presentations by visiting researchers Dr. Ludovic Schorpp (Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland) and Mr. Scott Stebbing (MSc student, Trent University).
Dr. Ludovic Schorpp presented a talk entitled “Geological and Groundwater Modeling of the Mekong Delta” . His research investigates arsenic contamination in groundwater across the Mekong Delta, with particular attention to the role of subsurface heterogeneity and redox processes. Within the framework of the DeltAs project, integrated geological and groundwater models are developed using open-source tools, calibrated with PEST++, and combined with particle tracking techniques to identify lithological controls that can help predict arsenic concentrations in groundwater.
Mr. Scott Stebbing delivered a presentation entitled “Geochemical Cycling and Bioaccumulation of Al and La in a Eutrophic Lake Undergoing Extended In-Lake Remediation” . His research examines spatial and temporal variations in physicochemical parameters and trace elements in the lake to better understand the factors controlling lanthanum (La) and aluminum (Al) geochemistry. The study also investigates the bioaccumulation of these elements in the aquatic ecosystem to assess the potential impacts of chemical amendments on the aquatic food web.
The seminar provided an opportunity for researchers and students at CARE to exchange ideas and discuss recent advances in groundwater modeling and aquatic geochemistry.
CARE sincerely thanks both speakers and all participants for their valuable contributions to this scientific discussion.
