In early June 2026, CARE successfully installed Cambodia's first-ever disdrometer on the new WinWin Campus of the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) in Phnom Penh - an important milestone for hydrometeorological research in the country.
This instrument will enable the measurement and analysis of rainfall microphysical characteristics, contributing to a better understanding and documentation of the extreme rainfall events that frequently affect the Cambodian capital and lead to recurrent flooding.
This deployment was made possible thanks to the strong commitment and involvement of our partners from the Coastal and Wetland Environmental Research Laboratory (CWE), within the Faculty of Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering at ITC. The installation was followed by a training session on instrument operation and data processing. The team was trained in the use of DISDRODB, an international collaborative database developed by the Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory at EPFL, which provides standardized tools for quality control, processing, and analysis of disdrometric observations.
A key step toward strengthening local capacities in hydrometeorological observation and flood-risk management.
CARE sincerely thanks the CWE laboratory team for their enthusiasm and support in making this achievement possible.
